Good market research is a basic requirement for any new business – but is particularly important if you do not have previous experience in the market you intend to enter. Concentrate on understanding what the customers really want and any gaps in what they are actually being offered.


You should analyse carefully your competitors and their strengths and weaknesses. This can be done by a careful look at their websites combined with talking to as many of their customers as possible.


The research should help you plan a strategy and devise a USP – Unique Selling Proposition. If you are entering an established market you need to ensure there is a good reason for a customer to choose you rather than the market leader whom they probably know better.

 

The end of this process should lead to:

  • A USP that can be summarised in one sentence

  • An understanding of the keywords most likely to be used

  • The customer benefits that are most important

  • An estimate of the average sale value from each customer and its net contribution.
